Festivals & Celebrations in Malaysia

Yo Wassap, Guys ! I am back today with an amazing topic to share with y'all which is Festivals and Celebrations in Malaysia. The range of festivals in Malaysia reflects its vibrant cultural diversity and religious tolerance, and assures you a glimpse into its rich traditions. While you saunter through this beautiful country exploring its many wonders, do try to witness a few of these Malaysian festivals and celebrations.


1. Hari Raya Aidilfitri

This traditional Muslim Holiday is celebrated at the end of Ramadhan (June). After a month of fasting, Malaysia's Muslim population are ready to celebrate ! The festival is marked by feasting, journeying from big cities back to small towns, and welcoming guests and friends into homes and also participate in special prayers held at mosques. You'll find lots of traditional Malay dishes and decadent desserts around this time. The most wondeful part is the Open House where Malaysians open their doors and shower warm hospitality on all guests with traditional delicacies and desserts.


2. Chinese New Year

Happening in January or February, this event turns the city red, and you'll see everything from parades and festivals to street vendors, and performances in all the major cities. The Chinese New Year's Eve dinner called "Makan Besar". Big families of several generations sit around round tables and enjoy the food and time together. Lion dances and dragon dances are widely seen in Malaysia during this festival. A lot of fireworks go up at 12am and it'll be a good show for viewers.



3. Deepavali

Deepavali or Festival of Lights usually celebrates on October or November. The Indian community in Malaysia makes the cities come alive with bright lights, vibrant colours, and high-energy festivities. You can see local Hindus celebrate this festival by using coloured chalk to craft different patterns and images on the ground over which they can scatter coloured rice to make what we called as Rangoli. All the varied races and religions in Malaysia gather up in oublic spaces or malls together to celebrate one of most prominent hindu festivals in Malaysia with greetings and sweets.


4. Thaipusam

As attribute to lord Muruga, a procession of devotees can be seen carrying spiked alters that actually pierce their bodies and carrying 'kavadis' for 3 days. Witnessing this is definetely a memorable experience, but might also make you fell a little squemish ! This festival usually happens in January or February which celebrated in four states of Malaysia (Kedah, Penang, Perak and Selangor).


5. Tadau Ka'amatan Harvest Festival

This native festival of Kadazan-Dusun, Sabah's largest ethnic group is essentially a celebration which held in may to thank the holy spirits for a bountiful harvest making it to the list of famous festivals in Malaysia. The headquarters of Kadazan Dusun Cultural Organization hold ethnic dane performances as well as dispaly of traditional sports like arm-wrestling, blowpipe shooting etc. Free-flow of Tapai and Lihing, the local rice wines adds to the spirit and fervour of one of the most interseting cultural festivals of Malaysia.


6. Gawai Festival

Celebrated by the indigenous Dayak's race of Sarawak , this harvest festival begins on 1st June and goes for a whole month. The Dayak's dress in their traditional attire, indulge in a fascinating ceremonial offering and welcome the New Year with gusto. The best place to witness the celebrations in their full glory is a longhouse, the traditional Dayak home with over 40 families residing under the same roof. Traditional dances, feasting and free-flowing tuak (rice wine) add vigour and charm to the celebrations.
